Take care of the skin you’re in..

Before my foodie days, I was a hustling makeup artist in New York City. Makeup and skincare are still a big part of my life, I just switched career paths about a few years ago. Believe it or not, many of these beauty products contain very harmful chemicals that can be cancerous, cause allergies, and can even be endocrine disruptors..I mean, to me thats crazy! No beauty product is worth risking your health.

You don’t have to get crazy with all this, but I came up with a list of ingredients that are in most products. This list can come with you the next time you do your beauty haul. Just watching out for certain ingredients can be so beneficial for your health.

Harmful ingredients to watch out for:

Benzophenone- a chemical linked to cancer and is used in products such as lip balm and nail polish.
Mica- mineral used in many cosmetic products; also used in cement and asphalt as well as insulation material for electric cable. Do you really want that on your face?
Talc- some talc contains asbestos and should be avoided in all powdered beauty products.
Phthalates- these are chemicals that are linked to endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, and cancer. It is actually banned from cosmetics in the European Union.
Parabens- are used as preservatives to avoid the growth of microbes and is linked to endocrine disruption.
Lead and heavy metals- included in lipsticks, whitening toothpaste, eyeliner, nail polish, and foundations. Exposure to heavy metals has been linked to health concerns including reproductive, immune, and nervous system toxicity.
Phenoxyethanol- is used as a preservative for cosmetics, perfumes, and soaps. Excessive exposure to this is linked to eczema and can acutely affect nervous system function.
Titanium Dioxide- used in powdered makeup. If inhaled, it’s considered a possible carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Polytetrafluoroethylene (aka Teflon) – This non-stick ingredient is associated with delayed menstruation, late breast development, and cancer.
Ethanolamine Compounds (MEA, DEA, TEA And others)- these chemicals are used extensively in cosmetics and can be linked to liver tumors, cancer, and organ system toxicity.

Look for cosmetics that are organic or made with very little ingredients If you can’t pronounce most of the items on the list, then most likely it shouldn’t be going onto your skin. You can always use a site call Environmental Working Group to check out the hazard levels of most beauty products on the market. Stick to any level below a 4 in my opinion. Best of luck with your next beauty haul and take care of the skin you’re in!

Be well 🙂
